"Round Three: McCain summoned old-fashioned antigovernment outrage in the final debate. But this is a different year." by Joe Klein in TIME magazine, October 27th, 2008 page 29.
In the third and final presidential debate, "John McCain entered the third debate with Obama a chastened man." . The use of the word "chastened" taught me a new word and it showed me that McCain is now on the defensive. I had thought he was still on the offensive. I learned that Obama wants the government to help solve health care instead of the people sorting it out. Looking back on the campaign, this article points out mistakes.
One the main mistakes, that the author suggests is hurting McCain's reputation, is the negativity. "... McCain had consistently stoked the rage as well as with non stop negative advertising and by questioning Obama's patriotism and trying to make an Everest out of the anthill of Obama's association - passing at best - with the former terrorist William Ayers."
Another mistake was his selection of VP. It is said that McCain wanted to choose Joe Lieberman as his running mate. Instead he listened to other advisors and selected Sarah Palin. "...McCain's monumentally dreadful selection of a running mate unqualified for the presidency" is seen to undermine his Ready on Day One campaign promise.
However, the article says McCain's recent messages are soild. The CNN focus group of independent Ohioians for the third debate like messages but rated Obama much higher.

You say all this about "chastend" but you never really say what it means. This is what it means.
To correct by punishment or reproof; take to task.
To restrain; subdue: chasten a proud spirit.
To rid of excess; refine or purify: chasten a careless writing style.
