Ivy - War in Iraq
I watched the debate on TV Friday night and McCain says that we are winning in Iraq, but what does it mean? My opinion is that we shouldn't be in Iraq in the first place. We should be trying to capture Osama Bin Laden. He is a bad guy who people think has weapons of mass destruction. That is worse than Iraq's terrorism. Iraq has "little" terrorism. Weapons of mass can be used for "big" terrorism. That is bad, very bad!

You're right Ivy, we shouldn't even be in Iraq, but to be fair to McCain, we don't really know where Osama is hiding. I still think we should help Georgia where Russia is invading.
I agree. Even if we shouldn't be in Iraq, we are and that's happened and we can't change that!
I agree with you Jeremy. We don't actually know where he is.
Good post Ivy, and insightful comments from both Jeremy and Elizabeth.
Whether or not we should be in Iraq, Elizabeth was right to point out that there is not much to be done about that now. It seems to me that the much more important question is how much longer we should stay.
Ivy, I think that's a good question to pose to Senator McCain and other proponents of the Iraq war who claim we're winning; what exactly does that mean? I thought we had "won" in May of 2003, when Bush gave his "Mission Accomplished" speech. (ask your parents if you're not sure what I'm talking about there.)
Jeremy, I'm glad you brought the conflict in Georgia into the mix. Perhaps you could do a separate post that explains the situation there to the rest of the class, and also argues for U.S. intervention.
I strongly believe that we should stop the war in Iraq. But should we attack someone with destructive weapons? With an army this small?
Logan, what kind of weapons do you think they have? Bush "thought" that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and that's one reason we started the war. And to leave , after about 7 years of fighting you don't just stop and say, "We'll be going now, guess we shouldn't be here in the first place." And what exactly does "winning" mean...?
That is a good point Elizabeth, but then why would Osama Bin Laden talk about wiping Israel off the face of the earth? Or call it a stinking corpse?
Do you think Osama will fufill his plans to do so(wipe out Israel)? Or is it being used as an expression such as " I'm going to kill you if you tell this and that." Do you mean it? Just because Israel is small doesn't mean it's not important to America. It is the only reliable "friend" we have in the Middle-East. The stable base in that area/region.
